First Ever - It's Monday What are you Reading

Going off of what I saw on J. Kaye's Monday Post I will structure mine the same.

The book I finished last week was the third Harry Potter book. I seem to be the little engine that could when it comes to reading books - just 1 book at a time and slowly. I want to be able to read more books in a week so perhaps I'll make that a goal for myself.

The book I'm currently reading is the 4th Harry Potter book. I hope to get it done by next week.

I did not give up upon any books ( I have in the past though).

Books Up to bat . . .

  1. Never Slow Dance With a Zombie
  2. HP #5
  3. Hush Hush
(and with my aforementioned goal I hope to knock out at least 1 book while still reading HP #4)

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

This is my favorite Harry Potter book!!! I absolutely love the story line, and I always instantly fall in love with Sirius and Buckbeak.

Harry's second summer break from Hogwarts is a bit better from the last. He doesn't have a house elf trying to "help" him, his owl has some freedom, and he took some of his school supplies up to his room while the others weren't looking. One day he receives a letter from school which has his supplies for the new school year and a permission slip to be signed by the parent/guardian. The permission slip would allow Harry to visit a wizarding village - and Uncle Vernon won't be of use unless. . .

Aunt Marge (Vernon's sister) is coming to visit them. Harry makes a deal with Uncle Vernon - he'll behave if Vernon signs the slip. Everything was going well until the last night when Aunt Marge over stepped the line by calling Harry's parents "good for nothings". Harry gets so infuriated that he unwittingly starts to blow Aunt Marge up. In a split second decision he grabs all his school supplies and leaves the house. He's running away, and doesn't care if he gets expelled from Hogwarts - anything was better than being stuck in that house.

Harry is picked up by the Knight Bus and asked to be taken to Diagon Alley. When Harry arrives at Diagon Alley he runs into Fudge, who is the last person he wants to see. But instead of being expelled from school Harry is shocked when Fudge tells Harry to rent a room and wait till the school year begins. Harry later catches up with his friends and they enjoy the last days of summer.

The school year begins and Harry is glad to be back, well not entirely. Siruis Black has escaped from prison and everyone thinks he's after Harry. This means that the teachers follow Harry's every move, and soul sucking dementors. As the school year progresses sightings of Siruis Black don't occur until one day when their painting has been torn to shred and the painting says it was Siruis. Harry wants to find Siruis and get revenge for the death of his parents.

I loved this book. I liked how it wasn't like the other two - in which Harry once again become the hero. In this story Harry wasn't the bright start doing what we expected - him to save the day. The one thing I keeping asking myself is why was Voldermort so hot to get them? It said in the third book that Voldermort was always 1 step behind them but what was the Potter family to him? I always hated how J.K. killed Siruis off.

12 Blogs of Christmas Day 8

Day 8 of the 12 days of Christmas is being held by Cindy of Princess Bookie! Hurry up and sign up to win amazing books! :) (Hyperlinked to general blog)

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Harry's summer has passed rather slowly and dully. He hasn't gotten any letter's from his best friends Ron or Hermonie - so what gives? What makes matters worse is ever since he came home his Uncle Vernon locked all his school materials underneath the stairs and locked his owl in her cage.

His summer gets worse the night that his uncle has a very important dinner party. A house elf named Dobby, with only the best intentions, ties to warn Harry not to go back to school - the only problem is Dobby goes about it the wrong way. When the Dursley's learn that Harry can't use magic outside of school they lock him up in his bedroom.

Finally his best friend Ron comes to his aide - and help Harry escape the evil clutch of the Dursley's. When it's time for everyone to go back to school the arrive at the train station - everyone makes it pass the barrier but Ron and Harry. They miss the train and they've started to draw the attention of the muggles - so they decided to take Ron's father's magic car to Hogwarts (bad idea boys.)

The adventure is fun until the car dies and they crash land into a walloping tree. To make matters worse they get caught by Snape - who hates them - and are told they are skating on thin ice and if 1 more toe get out of line then they will be expelled. The days pass on a little better until the 3 of them are caught standing near the "dead" body of Mrs. Norris. They were just at the wrong spot at the wrong time. On the wall someone wrote "The Chamber of Secrets has been opened. Enemies of the Heir beware" and when everyone sees it - chaos ensues. Attacks keep happening and with no solution insight. Whispers around school begin to grow as everyone suspects that Harry is the Heir causing all the attacks - but he's not and is going to prove it - even if it means expulsion.

I have to say, this is my least favorite book out of the whole series. It took me awhile to get into it. I just didn't like it - and I'm trying to think of why, because their are obviously reasons and I'm not a 3yr saying "because". Dobby irritated me, and I think it was the whole plot of this book - but I can see how it's leading up to the last book. Although Glidory Lockheart was funny, everyone hated him but he was too thick to see it!

Books in this series:

3) Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
4) Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

HOLLY SMOKES BATMAN! When I googeled the title of this book google mostly brought up pictures from the movie, and Daniel Radcliff was like 5! Ok, not that young but still. Man I remember when the 1st movie game out, and my dad pulled my sister and I out of school so we could see it. That was a magical day for me - not because of HP but because I got to spend time with my dad and he made it so magical.

Back to the review of this book.

Harry Potter doesn't know what's so special about him. In fact all he knows is that his life is miserable. His Aunt Petunia is nosey and loud, his Uncle Vernon is fat and vicious, and his cousin Dudley is spoiled rotten and vicious like his father. He has no friends at school because everyone fears Dudley and as far as comfy beds go Harry has a lumpy one under the stairs. He doesn't know what happened to his parents, except for they died in a car crash.

Odd things keep happening to Harry, he doesn't know why, and when they do his aunt and uncle become furious at him. The months following up to his 11th birthday begin to act strange - to say the least. People walk around in funny costumes, and owls are everywhere during daylight hours! Letters addressed to Harry start to arrive at the Dursley's house - and Uncle Vernon tries to stop Harry from reading them. Eventually Harry receives his letter and learns he is a wizard.

The wizarding world is strange for Harry but he adjusts quickly even making new friends and enemies. His school year begins to get adventurous when he believes on of the school's own professors is after a mysterious package that Albus Dumbledore does not want found. It's up to Harry, Ron, and Hermoine to stop the professor from getting that package!

Reading this book brought be back to the 6th grade when I first started reading the books. I can't believe how long it's been! I remember fighting with my sister over who would get to read the newest book first and waiting with strained patience when I didn't win and had to wait for her to finish. My only complaint for the WHOLE series was how it ended. It felt like a cop out! She should've at least done 1 more book this time being the gangs time in college and fighting a rouge group of Voldermort supporters or something. Eh. All in all though it was a great book :)

Kitty and the Silver Bullet

2 things come to the front of my mind before I begin this review.

1) I'D LIKE TO THANK DARLA D. FOR SHOWING ME THIS SERIES and. . .

2) I love guessing how the title of the book relates to the plot.

For those of you that follow this series you will recall with no problem that Kitty has been on the move for about a year. She had to leave her pack in Denver after her best friend T.J. was murdered by the Alpha Male Carl. Kitty and T.J. were a huge threat to Carl and Meg (the Alpha female). When Carl kills T.J. she has no choice but to leave Denver and ne'er return.

The journey that Kitty's been on in the past year has had many highs and extreme 'lows'. Well does public humiliation qualify as a "low"? She has come away from her adventures on the road as a strong person: more sure in the power of who she is both Human and Wolf. She has meet many helpful people (vampiric and lycanthropic alike) and has also helped to take down corrupt people in high places.

When she receives a call on night her world is turned askew. She receives a phone call telling her that her mother is ill and Kitty is needed immediately. Instant fear strikes kitty. This isn't a cold, not it's much worse: her mother might have breast cancer.

However, it won't be easy for Kitty to return to Denver. Her old pack still roams the lands, and Carl and Meg would be all too happy to end Kitty's life. Plus one of her friends Rick (a vampire) has asked for Kitty's help in staging a coo with the Master of the City. The coo won't be easy - for Carl has sided with the old Master - and this is a fight that will involve everyone.

I love these books. I know, I know I say that about every book but it's true! I've only picked up 1 book (ok 2) that I haven't been able to get past the first 100 pages! I can always trust Darla D's advice when she recommends me books. Kitty has grown much more in this last book - and she'd have too. Facing and illness is never easy for any party involved, but it makes your stronger (and I mean mentally). She also had to finally face the fact that she's a leader and can't always fun from her problems. Sure, she still may try - but don't we all?

I'm trying to think of any parts I might of hated in the book, and I can't think of a single on. Ok, maybe 1 but it's more of my opinion - but when I think about it - there is really no point. I sometimes which she'd gone with Cormac. I mean, Ben's alright and stuff but Cormac is like the rough and ruggedly handsome type and I see Ben as more of a rather drab person (even though he can clean up enough to be on GQ covers).

Recommend to me by Darla D.

Tales for Delicious Girls

This is my 1st ever book review for a publisher. OMG! I never thought this day would come :) Also, it is my first book read via PDF format - and I must say that although I'm used to reading words online I do prefer paper books (makes me wonder though if I'll like the kindle!)

The first thing that comes to my mind after reading this book is how warm and happy I feel after reading this book; like I'm snuggled in my favorite blanket in-front of the fire watching my favorite movie. This book is something I have needed to come across and read. It is a beacon of hope among a world of negative images for women.

Barbora gives us 25 delicious tales from her wonderful life. The tales cover relationships, friendships, jobs, life really. I am just a wee bit jealous that she's been to so many places in the world - and that she has actually found lover for herself. Finding love for myself is something I still struggle with today, but it's one of her powerful messages in her book: That it is obtainable but is worth the hard work obtaining it.

Her book helps women to see that they are important, smart, powerful beings in this world - and that men however cute, aren't that important to our happiness. She gives insight into the men's way of thinking and helps us to understand that they just plain think differently. Period. She helps us to understand that at the end of the day the only person that should love us the most is us. We should no longer belittle and berate ourselves of our "imperfections" and instead should embrace them and understand that they are what makes us unique.

One message from this book that hit home to me was that each time we want to "change" ourselves (either new hair color/cut, new clothes, new body, etc) we should first look inside ourselves and see what the real issue is. And I find it true. When I want a new dramatic hair color or hair cut there's a reason behind it. I don't know what the issues is but I know it's because I'm unhappy with myself, but I never dig deep enough to think why.

I recommend this book to every single woman out there. No topic goes untouched. She tells it to you in a delicious way that makes you think you've been friends forever and that you're just sitting down for a nice cup of coffee. When you're done reading this book (well at least for me) you feel happy and for now - you don't hate that your not a size 0 or that your hair isn't what "Hollywood" says is "in". You feel proud to be you - and that's what Barbora wants us to understand from her book.

My only tisk of the book would be that sometimes the pictures wouldn't match what I was reading (even though they were beautiful pictures) and that sometimes her word choice in a sentence/title would leave me confused. Again these are only my problems. I'm sure those of you reading would be like "Oh that word? I so know the meaning. How could she not know it??" Lol.

Also please stop by and visit her website!! Barbora Knobova's Website. Her book is Non-Fiction! (Thanks Darla! Sometimes I forget that not everyone can read my mind :P)

Go now and pick it up. PLEASE!

Hello guys! I assure you I'm not a vampire, zombie, or umm TV addict. I've just been in a slump lately - when I got sick a month ago I found myself having no will to blog, read, or move out of bed. So it's been a slow process for me to get the ball rolling again on blogging and reading! I miss it terribly and I loved visiting all the blogs :) I hope to reappear soon :) Thanks for the patience. I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving (and if you don't celebrate it I hope you had a wonderful weekend!) The holidays are coming up soon and I'm excited. I only like the month of December because people seem to be a bit kinder to each other - I could care less if I got a gift or not (it's the thought that counts!!) That's all for me now - I'm reading a wonderful Sci-fi book that I can't wait to review and then I think I'll read a Harry Potter book (I've been meaning to re-read those forever now!)

Bitten to Death

As with all Jaz Parks adventures - they are full of adventure and the constant struggle of keeping one's head on straight.

Jaz and Vayl have been assigned to a wonderful ancient city in Greece (lucky ducks!) The two must head to the local Vampire Trust and stop Samos (the Vampire version of Brain from Pinky and the Brain) from taking the Trust over. This will not be easy because Vayl left the Trust some 100 years ago - and well there are still some sore feelings in regards to Vayl. When they arrive they expect to be greeted by the Deyrar (president) Hamon instead are greeted by a new Deyrar. They quickly find out that the Deyrar they had originally negotiated with found an untimely death.

The new Deyrar is problematic to say the least. Disa was turned by Vayl and is a power hungry . . .witch to say the least. When Disa became Deyrar not everyone was happy - and now the once beautiful lands of the Trust have begun to decay ever since she took the seat. One problem at a time though because Vayl and Jaz didn't come to solve the Trust's problems.

Vay and Jaz have to stop Samos from taking over the Trust (priority #1). If the Trust falls then Samos is closer to taking over the world. Then they have to stop Disa from whatever scheme she is planning (priority #2). Disa is power hungry and is stopping at nothing to get what she wants. Then they have to save Vayl from the unknown trap they walked into. Quite a busy day for Jaz and her team.

Like all her books, it's action packed until the very last page. I find I have such a hard time writing reviews of this book series for that very reason. I always feel like I do these books injustice but please THEY ARE FABULOUS BOOKS! THEY ARE NOT FOR ONE SECOND LAME!!

Ms Darla has some excellent reviews on this series :) So if my review falls flat please jump over to hers! (I only linked to her main blog so you'd have to find the reviews)

This book was recommended to me by Darla D!

The Lightning Theif

Many of you have seen this book, but by another cover. When I read this book - this was the cover for moi. I like it a bit more than the other versions.

Percy Jackson is a troubled teen. He's been to numerous schools only staying a year in each. The teachers have labeled him a trouble maker with ADHD and dyslexia. That alone, doesn't cause him to relocate to a new school every year. No, instead it's something entirely different. Weird things keep happening to Percy - sights that are confusing and scary.

When we are introduced to Percy Jackson he is a sixth grader at Yancy Academy. Yancy Academy is a private school in New York for 'troubled kids'. The year was going ok, until he went on a trip with his Latin teacher Mr. Brunner and other kids to Metropolitan Museum of Art to look at the Greek and Roman artifacts. Mrs. Dobbs his mean spirited Algebra teacher accompanies them. Now, that alone is nothing out of the ordinary, except Mrs. Dobbs hates Percy Jackson with a passion and makes sure that she always punishes him. Some kids were picking on Percy's best friend Grover, but Percy is unable to do anything because he already skating on thin ice. He gets angrier and angrier at the girl picking on Grover and suddenly she's drenched by the fountain water. How could that have happened? The water could not have acted on its own.

Mrs. Dobbs zeros in on Percy and tells him to follow her into the depths of the museum. Mr. Brunner is unaware of what's happening (and is Percy's only hope.) When Percy catches up with Mrs. Dobb, they are all alone and suddenly she turns into this hideous creature! Frighted and with nothing to fight back with Percy begins to back up until Mr. Brunner comes to his rescue and gives Percy a mighty sword. After killing Mrs. Dobbs the evil creature Percy returns to Mr. Brunner who doesn't even know who Mrs. Dobbs is.

That's only the beginning for Percy. Soon he's told that he is a demi-God, and even though he doesn't know his father, he has to go to a camp for half-bloods such as himself. While at the camp he befriends fellow half-bloods and learns that there is a feud brewing in Mt. Olympus. Percy has been thrown between 3 fighting gods - Hades, Zeus, and Poseidon. Hades and Zeus are blaming him for stealing Zeus Master Lightning Bolt. However Percy just found out he is a demi-god and Poseidon is his father. He didn't steal the bolt but now he has to prove he didn't. But the odds are stacked against him; he has little training and will be going up against the might of the gods.

Don't worry. I won't finish the paragraph with "Can he prove himself to the gods and live?" Lol. I have always loved Greek mythology. I know all the gods by their Greek names, and Vince knows them all by their Latin names. It's funny b/c I have a little Greek in my family tree and Vince is Italian. So it's always fun for me to say that the Romans copied everything from us Greeks :P Getting back to the point, is I love how this book weaved the mythology into present day life! Chiron (the centaur) told Percy that the gods are very much real and that they follow were the "torch" is. So it once was in Rome but is now in the West. Such a cool idea! Percy has to fight other "myths" such as Medusa (one of the Gorgons) and fight a Minotaur. god it was so good! I read the book in like a day because I was hooked :)

Do y'all read Greek Myths? Vince and I love them and talk about them often. In fact he has this amazing book that has all the Greek and Roman myths told in the best versions. *Swoon*

I suggest quickly re- learning your myths before you read this book otherwise you won't be as impressed and you'll be very confused. Please read this book. It is SOO AMAZING! and Pretty please read up on your Greek Mythology!! Promise? AND PLEASE TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK !!

Undead and Unwed

Betsy has just been fired from her job. It just makes so much sense that when a company is going under, the big wigs fire the secretaries who know how to answer phones, order more office supplies, and make the office run smoothly. So obviously you fire the help who makes less. No brainer! Wrong.

On the way home Betsy goes to let her cat Giselle back into the home, but when Betsy notices Giselle in the middle of the road about to face death Betsy runs out to save her. Big mistake. Giselle being the nimble cat she is, jumps out of the way in time. Betsy however, doesn't and the car hits her sending her sailing into a tree, where she dies. Or so everyone including herself, thought. She awakes days later to find herself in complete dark, and in a padded place. When she pushed her hands up she finds that she can push the wall. When she gets out she finds that she was in a coffin! Is this someone's idea of a joke?! As she walks around the funeral home trying to find people, she comes across a poor make-uped woman in cheap ugly shoes. Wait! That's her! Her step-mother dressed her in an ugly suite (totally not her color) and her cheap ugly shoes - fully knowing that Betsy has designer pumps at home.

Betsy can't figure out why she isn't dead. She should be. She remembers flying into the tree and hearing her bones crack and watching her blood flow out of her body. Why isn't she dead? So she decides to re-kill herself. She jumps into a moving truck and watches as she only dents the truck's grill and barely gets a scratch. So then she decides to jump off a building, but again, only a scratch. Finally she decides to walk into church and hopefully burn upon entering. No such luck. She can't figure out why she's not dying! Could it still be that God loves her and has a plan for her?

That night she decides to get all her designer name shoes back, so she pays her step-mom and father a visit. When they see Betsy they freak out! She's alive but she can't be. Betsy goes straight to the step-mother from hell and demands the return of the shoes. As Betsy goes to get her shoes back she runs into her best friend Jessica. They quickly re-unite and go back to Betsy's house. The girls quickly figure out that Betsy is a Vampire, even though the run of the mill Vampire rules aren't applying to Betsy.

One night she gets a call asking if she is Betsy and to meet at a bookstore. Betsy agrees and doesn't care if the guy is good or bad. As she is walking down the street she gets kidnapped by 3 men carrying crosses. Betsy doesn't want to give away the fact that crosses don't scare her. When the limo stops and the guys take her out she is brought to a short, squat balding guy named Nostro who is the head vampire. Betsy burst out laughing because this guy is a walking cliche! She catches the eye of Sincliar who is sinfully good looking and a leader for another coven. When Sincliar gets her attention he tells her that she has to join his side (against Nostro) or it will spell doom for every vampire. Suddenly Betsy finds herself in a battle for power - which side does she choose?

God this book is amazing :) It's so fun and witty! Betsy is a firecracker who is at times, selfish. But aren't we all? I find it interesting that the nemesis is rather short, and ugly. Like Betsy says - the villains are always sexy. Right? Her best friend Jessica is a wonderful addition to the story. Even though this is a vampire book it is 1)written for adults 2)NOT LAME 3) such a wonderful read you won't be disappointed and you'll find yourself picking up the next book in no time.

The Taker

We all know of that 3 letter word that strikes panic into our hearts, paralyzing our hands, and freezing our brains. What word is it . . . have you guessed. It begins with an "S" . . . still not sure? Well here it is . . .

S-A-Ts.

It's ok . . relax you don't have to take them . . . or if you do I feel s0 sorry for you. I think I got like a 200/2400 on the test. My HS class year was the 1st year that they started doing it out of 2400. Needless to say I'm SO not a test taker like our main heroine Carly Biels.

She is a student teachers love to have - A's and B's are the grades she receives, she always does her work - and always participates in class. You get the idea, she's a good student. Her Achille's heel would be the S.A.T. or any test that has you color in those totally tiny and annoying dots. I hates those - I always worry that I don't erase enough. When she sees those blue or green dotted sheets her mind goes into instant panic and freezes! The problem is now it's in hyper-drive because it's the S.A.T.s and on top of getting the perfect score she has, and I mean has to get into Princeton. You see her father went to Princeton, her grandfather and even her great-grandfather went and if she doesn't go well then she's a failure (or so she believes.)

When she takes the test she feels she's done decent, and she understands it won't be anywhere near perfect but as long as it's in the 20000s she doesn't mind. She waits for the clock to strike 8am before calling the College Board, and when she hears her score she's sure that there is a mistake . . . her score is 1710!

She gets a text of her cell phone that says "I can help you. - The Taker." The rumor around school is there is a person that will take the SAT for you and get you within 100 points of the perfect score. Carly ignores the text - she's no cheater. The next day she talks to her parents who say that they are all going to talk to Mr. Fellner who is the head honcho of college guidance office. When her parents and her are talking to Mr. Fellner, he puts it bluntly; her scores suck and she has no hope of getting into Princeton. However, Mr. Biels won't take that as an answer and says that there must be something that can be done - and the only solution is for Carly to take Mr. Lettich's SAT prep class which costs $$ and is hard to get into. For now though Carly must study with a tutor and try to get her scores up so that she can get into Mr. Lettich's class. Later that week she gets another message from the taker - last chance, does she want his/her help? The final rule (out of 8!) is that once agreed to there is no turing back. She replies back to him saying that yes, she'll use his help.

The rules of The Tester are clear: keep studying and take the test. When Carly continues to study for the SAT she starts to believe in herself and realizes that hiring The Tester was such a bad mistake! As the test draws near she has to decide to cancel it off with The Taker or cheat using his/her help after all.

This was such a nice break. I'm currently reading a book and I'm just having a hard time getting through it, so when I picked up this book I knew instantly that it was going to be such an adventure :) In the story there are other problems going on in her life: social, family pressure, romance, peer pressure the normal high school "issues". I know that if I were offered to cheat, I certainly would not. I wouldn't be able to live with knowing that my scores were in-fact not my own so that any school I got into wouldn't be my own hard work.

Another issue I had was with Carly herself. Her boyfriend was a totally jerk - but she still stayed with him!!! She constantly let him walk all over her as she continued to make excuses!! AND EVEN WHEN SHE CAUGHT HIM KISSING ANOTHER GIRL SHE STILL QUESTIONED WHETHER OR NOT TO STAY WITH HIM!!!! ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!! LIKE FOR REAL!

I loved this book! It was just such a fun read, I kept laughing at the right times and cringing when the moment called. It is a wonderful book - and if you are getting ready for the SATs quickly read this book as a nice relaxer :) It will have you felling like the SAT is just 3 letter word and that's all.
